Awarded the Costa-Rican Composers/Authors Association (ACAM) 2011 Composition Prize

Some surprising news from Costa Rica. Last week I was given the national award for composition. Unfortunately I couldn’t be there but my family picked up the award and sent me a snapshot of the imprint. Below are excerpts of a couple of newspaper articles (in Spanish) published after the event.


La Nación 31/05/2011: “Desbancó Mauricio Pauly a los nombres consolidados en el campo de la música académica, como lo son Alejandro Cardona y Eddie Mora, al llevarse el premio de compositor/autor del año música formal/académica por su obra Cuarteto de Cuerdas N.° 2.

Así Pauly, cuyo referente era mayormente para la escena que había sido un miembro de Bruno Porter, demostró cuán bien ha caminado, y camina, en muchas músicas. Ya se le conocía su veta aún más experimental con proyectos como Leche Vaqera (sic), pero el galardón a sus posibilidades dentro de lo formal/académico le dibujó de otra manera para muchos.” (Ana María Parra, full article)

Red Cultura 03/06/2011 : “En el ámbito de la música clásica, Mauricio Pauly se impuso ante dos pesos pesados del género en el país: Alejandro Cardona y Eddie Mora. Pauly vive en Inglaterra por lo que no estuvo en la premiación, pero su padre agradeció el premio: “Me alegra que ahora tenga uno de su propio país”, en alusión a los otros premios que ha ganado en el extranjero.” (Natalia Rodríguez Mata, full article)


Staubach Honoraria for composition

In 2008 Harry and Alice Eiler donated the Staubach Prize for the first time. Within the 45th International Summer Courses for New Music Darmstadt this prize has been changed into five Staubach Honoraria and his amount doubled.

The jury of three consisting of Hans Thomalla, Martin Iddon and Thomas Schäfer came to a decision in November 2009. The five by the Harry and Alice Eiler Foundation donated awards went to: Stefan Prins (Belgium), Aaron Einbond (USA), Malin Bång (Sweden), Evan Gardner (USA/Norway) and Mauricio Pauly (Costa Rica).

–I will be writing a new piece for the Norwegian ensemble Asamisimasa [cl, elec. gtr, pn, perc, vc] to be rehearsed and premiered during the 2010 Darmstadt International Summer Course.


Solti Foundation grant

PRS Foundation/Bliss Trust award

performed by Dalma Cseh at the Small Hall of the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Budapest and then in live broadcast from the Hungarian Radio studios.

Cuarteto Alberto [string quartet n.1]

Composed in 2001 this piece was awarded first prize at the Pablo Sorozabal Composition Competition 2005 and premiered by the Iturriaga Quartet in at the Quincena Musical 2006 in San Sebastián, Spain.
