I’m currently working on a new piece for clarinet, violin, cello and percussion for Talea Ensemble to perform at the Harvard University Residency for Composers. I will be in Cambridge, MA the last two weeks of August 2012 to attend lessons and lectures with Chaya Czernowin, Hans Tutschku, and Steven Kazuo Takasugi and to rehearse with the Ensemble.

Distractfold Ensemble’s second concert took place last Thursday February 16th at the Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester. The concert included, Far-off, a new string trio by Santiago Díez-Fischer, the UK premieres of Sam Salem‘s The Sun Warms The Memory, for tape and of Felipe Lara‘s violin and clarinet duo, Postcard, and a new performance of my piece of 2008, Clinamen clinamen clinamen, for clarinet, 2 violins, viola and cello.

The piece, for tenor saxophone, cello and piano was commissioned by the Galician ensemble Vertixe Sonora. It’s premiere performance on November 29th 2011 was recently reviewed on mundoclasico.com. Pablo Coello, sax – Thomas Piel, cello – David Durán, piano.

Dal Niente : Chicago Nov 2011 – Darmstadt July 2012

I was in Chicago the 1st week of November for the first phase of rehearsals of the Ensemble Composition Workshop with Ensemble Dal Niente - the sessions were led by Lucas Fels (Arditti Quartet) and Hans Thomalla. The second phase of rehearsals and the premiere of the piece will be in Darmstadt in July of 2012 at the 46th Darmstadt Ferienkurse.

Eunoia Ensemble has commissioned me to write a new work for performances in Basel, Luxembourg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Edinburgh, London and Manchester during March of 2012. I will add in specific details about the concerts shortly.
Eunoia is: Johanna Greulich – soprano, Ellen Fallowfield – cello, Stephen Menotti – trombone,
Clemens Hund-Goeschel – piano, Louisa Marxen – percussion

The piece (Working title: Dust Unsettled) will feature a text by Gabriel Montagné titled Hombres que se caen del caballo / Men who fall off horses.

Awarded the Costa-Rican Composers/Authors Association (ACAM) 2011 Composition Prize

Some surprising news from Costa Rica. Last week I was given the national award for composition. Unfortunately I couldn’t be there but my family picked up the award and sent me a snapshot of the imprint. Below are excerpts of a couple of newspaper articles (in Spanish) published after the event.

La Nación 31/05/2011: “Desbancó Mauricio Pauly a los nombres consolidados en el campo de la música académica, como lo son Alejandro Cardona y Eddie Mora, al llevarse el premio de compositor/autor del año música formal/académica por su obra Cuarteto de Cuerdas N.° 2.

Así Pauly, cuyo referente era mayormente para la escena que había sido un miembro de Bruno Porter, demostró cuán bien ha caminado, y camina, en muchas músicas. Ya se le conocía su veta aún más experimental con proyectos como Leche Vaqera (sic), pero el galardón a sus posibilidades dentro de lo formal/académico le dibujó de otra manera para muchos.” (Ana María Parra, full article)

Red Cultura 03/06/2011 : “En el ámbito de la música clásica, Mauricio Pauly se impuso ante dos pesos pesados del género en el país: Alejandro Cardona y Eddie Mora.
